Das Center for German & European Studies at the University of Minnesota organisiert in Kooperation mit der Europa-Universität Viadrina sowie dem Institut d'Histoire Culturelle Européenne and Université de Lorraine in Metz das Trans-Atlantic Summer Institute „Borders in Motion — New Dynamics of Inclusion and Exclusion across Europe and North America“. Finanziert wird das Event u.a. mit Geldern des DAAD.

Bewerben können sich u.a. Doktoranden/-innen, deren Doktorarbeit bzw. Forschungsschwerpunkt in Zusammenhang mit dem Thema der Sommerschule steht. Gute Englischkenntnisse sowie mindestens Lesekompetenzen in einer weiteren europäischen Fremdsprache sind Bewerbungsvoraussetzungen.

Teilnehmenden bietet sich die Chance, im Rahmen der interdisziplinär angelegten Sommerschule den Forschungskontext einer amerikanischen Universität kennenzulernen und sich mit ihrem Thema unmittelbar in internationale Forschungsdiskussionen einzubringen. Internationale Mobilität gewinnt zunehmend an Gewicht bei der Bewertung von Nachwuchswissenschaftlerbiographien.

Zugelassene Bewerber/-innen erhalten ein Stipendium, das ebenso die Teilnahmegebühr wie Unterkunft, Verpflegung sowie Zugang zu Bibliothek, Internetanschluss und Archivmaterialien abdeckt.

Doktoranden/-innen der Viadrina können zudem Reisemittel beim Viadrina Center for Graduate Studies/der Kulturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät beantragen.

Summer Institute „Borders in Motion“ in Minneapolis in July 2013

The Center for German & European Studies at the University of Minnesota organizes in cooperation with the Europa-Universität Viadrina (Frankfurt Oder, Germany) and the Institut d'Histoire Culturelle Européenne and Université de Lorraine in Metz, France the Trans-Atlantic Summer Institute „Borders in Motion — New Dynamics of Inclusion and Exclusion across Europe and North America“.

Amongst others, doctoral students may apply, provided that their PhD or main research interest focuses on the event’s main topic. A good command of English and reading knowledge of another European language are required.

The Summer Institute introduces European students to the American university and fosters the international discussions and collaborations that are fundamental to the scholarly enterprise. As a student in the Summer Institute, you will learn how to combine the best aspects of training in both settings – the close attention to archival sources and their interpretation in Europe with the broad trans-disciplinary readings that characterize North American scholarship.

Admitted participants will receive a fellowship to cover the Institute tuition, housing and meals for the duration of the Institute as well as access to library, archival materials, and Internet resources. Doctoral students from the Viadrina may apply for a travel grant from the Viadrina Center for Graduate Studies.

Period: July 8th to July 20th 2013
